St. Kizito's School Sponsorship Program was founded in 1999.
The objective of the scheme is to offer assistance to students who have difficulty paying their school fees.
We discovered that many students were forced to leave formal
education because their parents or guardians were unable to
pay the tuition and examination fees.
School fees in the Gambia range
from €50.00 per year for
students attending nursery school to €600.00 per
year for a student at The University of The Gambia.
In the past students at all levels
of education have benefited from the scheme. Recently
because of financial constraints the schemes management team
have had to take the decision to limit the scheme to
students from Nursery School to Senior Secondary School.
The
Programme is currently sponsoring 210 students. Students apply to the
programme administrator for inclusion in the scheme.
Each applicant is interviewed by members of the
Management Committee. We monitor the progress of each
student. This process helps the schemes management
to advise both students and parents when
difficulties arise at school. We try to meet with
parents and guardians at least once a year to review
their child's progress.
Some of
the students in the programme have individual sponsors but
by and large we depend on donations from parish groups or
school or college groups to fund the programme. Last year
the programme spent €10'000
(ten thousand Euro) sponsoring students. Without the help of
our donors this programme would certainly fail. Since it
foundation we have sponsored more than one thousand five
hundred students in The Gambia.
We acknowledge
with gratitude the host of individual donors who financially
contribute to the programme.
The
Sponsorship Programme is managed by an administrator and has a committee of management.
All funds raised are used to sponsor students. The
administration costs are borne by St Kizito's Parish and
funded from a different source.
